HKers follow Canadian elections, find new PM “charismatic”

A survey commissioned by The Canadian Club of Hong Kong (est 1949), shows 81% of Hong Kong respondents know Canada’s new Prime Minister and find him ‘charismatic’, dynamic – and good looking. Canadians in Hong Kong were very engaged and had more nuanced views. Cimigo and Toluna deliver the results.


 

The Canadian Club of Hong Kong survey released today shows that Hong Kong’s general public was very aware of the federal election in Canada – and they liked what they saw – a young, ‘dynamic’ new leader, Justin Trudeau (43a.) who would lead the country into a better future.

Furthermore, Canadians living in Hong Kong were even more engaged with 98% following the elections.

Canada’s election last month garnered international attention not only for the change of government, but the ascension of Canada’s second youngest leader ever, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He made headlines again last week by naming a Cabinet that had a precise 50-50 gender balance.

Hong Kongers took note. Specifically, from 306 people surveyed by market research firm Cimigo, and digital marketing research firm Toluna, responded thusly:

  • 81% of respondents know the result of Canadian election and identified Justin Trudeau as the new PM.
  • Top characteristics of Trudeau identified: 1. Charismatic (49%); 2. Confident (49%); 3. Dynamic (47%); 4. Good looking/Attractive (46%); and 5. Personable (42%).
  • 84% believe Canada’s fortunes will improve under the new PM,

The majority said they knew who won the election and correctly identified Mr Trudeau as the winner (81%) and/or knew which party he represented (72%, the Liberal Party).

Chris Farquhar, Cimigo’s Managing Partner, added “These results are a clear sign that people in Hong Kong are very much aware of global politics and in particular with the countries that many have family and business ties to.”

 

Canadians in Hong Kong care

While the general awareness of Hong Kong’s public was high, Canadian citizens in Hong Kong were even more engaged: 98% followed the results, giving lie to the claim that Canadians abroad do not follow what happens in Canada.

Hong Kong has a wide range of Canadian centred social groups ranging from scores of alumni associations, to business groups like CPA Canada (Hong Kong), The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and the commissioning group, the Canadian Club.

Liliane Ng is part of the young wave of voters that made a difference in the election – even though she was in Hong Kong. Her day job is as a Director of jewellery line Valleys & Hills. But she is also a co- founder of Canadians in Hong Kong (CiHK), “an organisation that fosters a strong sense of Canadian spirit through hosting social and volunteering events.”

CiHK kept their interested members up to date on the election happening across the Pacific. “We tried to remain politically neutral while keeping Canadians in Hong Kong informed of elections progress, but the general consensus was clear: we were all rooting for Trudeau.”

Market research firm Cimigo and digital marketing firm Toluna conducted a randomised survey of 306 Hong Kongers in traditional Chinese and English, commissioned by The Canadian Club of Hong Kong (est. 1949).

41 respondents (13%) answered “Yes” to the question of ‘Are you Canadian?’. Estimates are over 300,000 Canadians live in Hong Kong (source).

 

Hey good-looking!

Just under half (46%) rated Trudeau as good looking/attractive. The result was the same among Canadian citizens and only marginally increased among women. While Hong Kongers knew he won, they were not confident of their knowledge of the new Prime Minister. Familiarity of Trudeau was low (67% saying they were slightly familiar or not at all familiar).

What little they do know is favourable. Top traits cited in an open question included, in order:

  1. Charismatic (49%), 2. Confident (49%), 3. Dynamic (47%), 4. Good looking/Attractive (46%), 5. Personable (42%).

Respondents generally think that Canada is going to improve under Trudeau’s leadership (only 6% disagree).

Canadians in Hong Kong took a slightly different tack.14% did  not agree with the statement that his election would improve Canada, while 82% agreed it would. Canadians were also more likely to describe the new PM with terms related to his character (rather that looks), using terms like ‘Dynamic’ (54%), Confident (46%), Personable (49%) and Intelligent (41%) and Dutiful (34%).
