Hongkong Post under fire as a thrilling and dramatic LegCo year 2014/2015 comes to an end.
July 27 Monday
Meeting of Panel on Economic Development
The LegCo’s Panel on Economic Development discussed incorporating in local legislation the latest standards of the International Maritime Organization concerning the number of life vests on board. The Marine Department also informed lawmakers that it was testing a new life vest that could be used by both adults and childern. The research result would be available by the end of 2015.
This was followed by a review session on the services provided by the Hongkong Post. The panel criticised the Post for refusing to disclose reports of an ill-fated plan to reform the postal service in 2008, which included details of a cash flow of HKD4m as consultation fee. Postmaster General Jessie Ting Yip Yin-mei noted that the reports contain confidential information and hence further study was required to figure what information could be made public. She also dismissed the suggestion to introduce post code system into the city.
Lawmakers also focused on over-recruitment of employees with contract bases, leading to a phenomenon of unequal pay for equal work, as well as future plans by the Post to adjust service fees.
