Former Chief Secretary, LegCo member, and HKU alumnus Anson Chan (陳方安生) wrote an open letter to John Wan Chung On (溫頌安), Chairman of the Standing Committee of the HKU Convocation, calling for HKU to engage auditors to ensure the integrity of proxy votes in the upcoming Emergency General Meeting on 1 September.
Sent yesterday, Chan’s open letter addresses the concern that “the Standing Committee of the Convocation considers it may not have adequate resources to check the bona fides of each and every proxy voter.” Thus, Chan “respectfully suggest that a reputable firm of auditors be engaged” so that “each proxy vote [can] be cross-checked to ensure both the applicant’s credentials, as a member of the Convocation, and to avoid potential duplication of proxy votes.”
Chan’s letter follows news that the pro-establishment HKU alumni group named “Supporting 10 Deans’ Joint Statement” is seeking proxy support from other graduates.
