Christine Choi among newly appointed bureau deputies

The government announced the appointments of 10 Undersecretaries and 8 Political Assistants on Tuesday, among them a controversial pick of school principal Christine Choi Yuk-lin as the new undersecretary for education despite strong opposition from the pro-dem camp. Eight officials have political party background, among them two are from the DAB and two from the Liberal Party. The line-up also sees three senior police officers filling the top three positions at the Security Bureau for the first time.

Former financial services minister back to HKUST

Former Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Prof KC Chan has returned to the Department of Finance, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School as professor.

A government advisory committee considered that employment of Professor Chan would not cause any potential conflict of interest and that it does not anticipate adverse public reaction or public perception problems arising from the proposed employment.

 

New chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries

On 31 July, the new term General Committee (2017-2019) of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) has elected Jimmy Kwok as the new chairman of the federation. Prof. Eric Yim, Dr. Daniel Yip, Dr. Jack Yeung, Dr. Sunny Chai and Sunny Tan were elected as Deputy Chairmen.

 

New head of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong

Following the retirement of Cardinal John Tong Hon, approved by Pope Francis, Coadjutor bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung will succeed Tong as the new head of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong.
