The government has announced that all 170 guests at Witman Hung’s birthday party at Reserva Iberica, Wanchai, will be required to undergo compulsory quarantine at Penny’s Bay. The announcement came after Joyce Yeung, a 53 year old talk show host at RTHK at the party, was found preliminarily positive. Previously, only those still present after 9:30 pm – when the original positive case arrived, a 37 year old woman who’s elderly mother had eaten lunch with another positive case – had to quarantine.
Yeung was later found to be a false positive. She got her test at her husband’s clinic and it is believed that her swab was contaminated by deactivated COVID viruses from a recent vaccination. However, another preliminarily positive case was soon discovered meaning all 170 guests have since remained in quarantine.
Those being sent into quarantine include about a dozen officials, including both immigration and police commissioners and 19 lawmakers. Lawmaker Junius Ho, who was among the exposed individuals, later visited Shenzhen for a meeting with high ranking mainland officials. Hung, the Hong Kong Deputy to the National People’s Congress, publicly offered his “sincerest apologies” to the people of Hong Kong.
No direct action has been taken by Beijing on the matter yet. Shenzhen meanwhile saw its first two local cases in a while yesterday, prompting the city to go into partial lockdown – you need to show a negative test 48 hours before leaving the city.
