Reportage: O Canada!

June 29, 2015

Canadians in Hong Kong celebrating Canada Day early on June 25. Carrie Lam, Jasper Tsang and Joyce Lee came to share the joy with Ian Burchett, Canadian CG in Hong Kong.

Consul General Ian Burchett hosted another smashing Canada celebration at the Rotunda at Exchange Square. The Canadian community and international friends all came out. With over  300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong, not everyone could make it, but many strapped on their skates and headed for the party.

In addition to the ‘hosers’ enjoying Canadian food, wine, beer and Tag42 maple infused vodka, Consul Generals from Greece, Poland, USA, Ireland, Myanmar, Japan, India, Belgium, the Netherlands, and European Head of Office Vincent Piket were out to celebrate. Ms. Judy Li and colleague Amy Li from Protocol were clearly having a great time.

Jasper Tsang Yok-sing had his game face on in the wake of the WhatsApp leaks. Guest of Honour Chief Secretary Carrie Lam took advantage of the occasion to reminisce about the ground-breaking of the Christian Alliance International School’s new premises, given its Alberta curriculum. She also lamented the non-passage of the constitutional reform package and the waste of 20 months of effort.

Joyce Lee, the Edmonton-born Canto-pop star, performed the national anthems of China and Canada, a number of her own works and Canadian crooner Michael Bublé’s hit song “It’s a Beautiful Day”. Polish Consul General Adamzyck Miroslaw said it was “the best performance of the Chinese national anthem I have ever heard!”

Top sponsors were the CK HutchisonGroup, the Delia School of Canada; and The Royal Bank of Canada. O Canada!
